Byrl Ivan Green and his twin brother Verl were born 19 Oct 1925 to Harry Orville Green and Marguerite May Manning at home in DeNova, Washington County, Colorado. They were the youngest of five children. Byrl left this life 10 Jan 2020 aged 94.
Byrl attended Hurry Back Valley School (Dist. 60) for his grade school years. District 60 is on the Yuma County line immediately south of the Baseline. He attended High Prairie High School (Dist. 52) for two years then transferred to Otis High School (Dist. 3) where he graduated with the class of 1944. High Prairie High was located some 19 miles south and 9 miles east of Akron.
Immediately after his graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army on 6 Jun 1944. He he attended basic training at Camp Steward, Georgia then was shipped oerseas on 6 Dec 1944 to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
Byrl was stationed at Leyte, Luzon in the Philippine Islands where he was assigned to an anti-aircraft artillery battalion that gave vital support to Maj. General Charles P. Hall's 11th Corps in its arrival to open Manilla Bay to allied shipping. He was also engaged in the recapture of Bataan and Corregidor. He was later moved to the medics where he spent the rest of his tour.
He was awarded both the Good Conduct and Victory Medals, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze service star.
He was discharged on May 14, 1946 at Fort Douglas, Utah with rank of Sergeant Tech 4 and was in the Army Reserve for three years afterward.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Lyle, Harry, Verl and sister Doris
He is survived by his wife of 72½ years, Geraldine; son, Dan (Diane); daughters, Nancy Borum (Bob) and Linda Perry (Bruce); six grandchildren, Bryan Borum, Greg Borum (Amy), Alyssa Borum Petermann (Daniel), Joshua Green, Michael Green (Ashley), and Wes Perry (Raylene); 12 great-grandchildren, Logan Borum, Connar, Owen and Ivan Borum, Ethan, Ariyana and Aurora Petermann, Adley, Aivry, and Liam Green, Baileigh and Eli Perry; sisters-in-law, Norma Northcutt and Doris Green; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at the Presbyterian Church of Akron with Pastor James Glisan officiating. Interment followed at the Otis Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Akron Elks, Akron VFW or American Legion.
